Basseterre
One of the island’s main attractions is Basseterre-the historic capital-set against a beautiful backdrop of St. Kitts’ emerald green hills and punctuated by elegant Georgian architecture.
St. Kitts was the first French settlement in the Western Hemisphere. The French settled on the island a few years after the British. The two partnered to defeat the Kalinago group, (commonly referred to as-Caribs), who were the original settlers. The Kalinago survivors fled to Dominica, leaving St. Kitts to be partitioned between the British and the French. The French gained the ends. Capisterre in the North and Basseterre in the south, and the British settled in the centre.
