To have a 360 degree experience of St. Kitts - the Caribbean's crown jewel - is to partake of paradise from a natural, cultural, historical and contemporary standpoint.
Kenny 'Captain Sunshine' Richardson has over 10 years' experience in providing guided tours of St. Kitts and will begin yours in historic Basseterre, capital of the mother colony of the British West Indies and the Eastern Caribbean’s oldest town.
In the heart of Basseterre you will see the former slave market (originally known as Pall Mall Square and now known as Independence Square) surrounded by some of the best preserved British and French colonial architecture in the entire Caribbean. Smiling Kenny will also explain to you the significance of the Berkeley Memorial and point out the St. Kitts National Museum, mere minutes away.
As you journey West from Basseterre, your guide will show you how our recent history and present day reality, coexist with ease. Passing the Cenotaph - a memorial to St. Kitts' sons who served in both of the World Wars - you will see the Fort lands area. Previously home to a garrison, it now houses elegant restaurants, a boutique hotel, private homes, foreign embassies and other diplomatic outposts.
Progressing further west still, the national hospital, local Coca-Cola bottling company, a uniquely positioned nest of egrets and two off-shore universities, dot the landscape on the way to the site of St. Kitts' bloodiest massacre. The year was 1626, the place Bloody Point. Assisted by a native spy, the English ambushed and attacked St. Kitts' indigenous people. By the time they were done, the rivers ran red with Carib blood.
In current times, Captain Sunshine will safeguard you and lead you on a brief walk through our pristine rainforest - the next stop on the journey. As you amble along the verdant paths of the river trail, your guide will give you an illustrative overview of the flora and fauna found there, before allowing you to indulge your adventurous side by swinging from sturdy tree vines.
Following that, a trip to the home of the local batik handicraft facility is in order. Since 1974, the skilled artisans at Caribelle Batik have worked diligently to produce distinctive clothing designs by employing this ancient art form. The rest of Romney Manor (home of Caribelle Batik), boasts botanical delights overflowing from the nearby Wingfield rainforest onto the 12 acres of this immaculately maintained property. Carib petroglyphs (rock carvings/drawings) can be found at the entrance to the Wingfield estate and Captain Sunshine is sure to point them out to you. Also, keep a keen eye out for a glimpse of any of St. Kitts' 50,000 mischievous green vervet monkeys - always sure to be darting about the property.
Moving ever onward, you will drive through Middle Island - home of the first Anglican church on St. Kitts and the burial site of English explorer and settler Sir Thomas Warner, before passing by Brimstone Hill - the Gibraltar of the West Indies and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A stop at the Gibbons Hill lookout affords you the rare chance to witness the furious dance that takes place when the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet.
Black Rocks, the site where massive boulders were deposited by the last volcanic eruption (1800 years ago) is a must see. Refreshments are served at this point and visitors are given a chance to have personal 'photo ops' before continuing the journey. Ask about the stately great houses and erstwhile plantations you'll see along the way. Many now function as inns and guest houses.
As you make your way to the end point of this incredible journey through picture perfect paradise, you will be driven through one of the more affluent and recently developed areas of St. Kitts. Frigate Bay is the home to many modern mansions - owned by locals and expats alike; the Marriott and other hotels, and some of St. Kitts' loveliest beaches.
After that you'll make your way to the crest of Timothy Hill on the Southeast peninsula, where you can behold the breathtaking views of our sister island of Nevis - bordered by the Caribbean Sea, as well as the stunning sight of the energetic Atlantic Ocean, on both sides of the peninsula.
Finally, on either South Friar's or Cockleshell beach you can participate at your leisure in a variety of beachfront activities including but not limited to horseback riding, aquatic sports, jet skiing, the children's trampoline and more. Or, you just might prefer to put the ultimate finishing touches to your amazing Kittitian excursion by having a rejuvenating holistic massage.
